The BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art is an art center for contemporary art situated alongside the Gateshead Millenium Bridge in Gateshead. BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art has no permanent exhibitions, thus only hosting various programs of exhibitions and events. One of the most notable events in Baltic is the Turner Prize happened in 2011 because it's the first time that this event was held outside the city of London. The Turner Prize exhibition also attracted more than 150,000 visitors. Historically, Baltic was once a flour mill in the late 1930s. In 1981, the mill finally got close and because the flour mill is considered as one of the city's local landmarks, this was converted to a contemporary art center instead after gaining funds from the Arts Council Lottery Fund.
