The airport first opened in 1982. In February 2007, the airport changed its name to its present name. While the new name appears on the website and logo, the FAA still has Addington Field on the record. Today, the airport occupies an area of 210 acres. There is one asphalt runway measuring 6,001 feet. As of 2008, there was a total of 12,400 aircraft operations recorded, 90% of which came from general aviation. In the same year, there were 60 aircrafts based on the airport. Aside from general aviation, parachuting and skydiving operations are also regularly conducted at the field. For neighboring areas located nearby, namely Douglass Hills, Fort Knox, or Jeffersontown to name a few, their locals can come and avail of these services from the EKX.
