Madisonville: Cave In To This Charming Town’s Calling
Previously known as Tellico, sharing the same name as that of another US city in Louisiana is Madisonville, Tennessee. Both are named in honor of Founding Father and former US President James Madison. It is a small city with also a small population of not more than 5000 residents. It houses the country’s biggest underground lake among the many other natural beauties it offers. Madisonville is the place for a quick weekend getaway.
Best Time to Visit
Madisonville, TN experiences long, hot summers and short winters. Moderate to heavy rainfall is prevalent throughout the year with a little chance of snow during winter. It is ideal to visit between April to June and September to October when it is most comfortable though do expect a lot of tourists during these times. Madisonville hotels are also pricier these months. The National Muscadine Festival is held September annually.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Craighead Caverns, which houses the largest underground lake in the United States known as The Lost Sea has tours available all-year round. It is one of the most thrilling underground boat lake riding and cave exploring. Perfect to take your kids out for some exercising is the Kefauver Park, which also happens to be near four geocaching locations. The Madisonville Golf Center is also one of the most visited attractions and has long been in town since the late 1930s.
Several minutes away from Madisonville are excellent hotels such as Grand Vista Hotel and Suites, Rodeway Inn Sweetwater, and Quality Inn Sweetwater. All of these are located in the neighboring towns as there are no immediate accommodations within Madisonville itself.
