Nouakchott, Mauritania, which used to be a small fishing village, is now the capital city of the country and is also considered to be one of the largest cities of Sahel – a distinct geographic border between the Sahara and the Savannah. The population settlement in Nouakchott grew from 15,000 in the late 1950s to about a million in present time. The economy of the city has drastically improved and has become a major tourist and business destination in the African continent. Nouakchott-Oumtunsy International Airport (NKC) is about an hour away from the city center.
