The region was named out of pure enthusiasm during 1878 and referred its inhabitants as Pocomoke. The region is rich in commerce and trade, especially in the areas in the lower shore. Originally called Newtown during the mid 1800s, the region only took the name Pocomoke, MD in 1878 derived from an American Indian name for a river in the region. Loosely translated, Pocomoke means “Black Water.”
