San Fernando: La Isla in Cadiz
San Fernando, Spain is a town in Cadiz also referred to as “La Isla” or “The Island”. It played an important role during the French occupation led by Napoleon in the 19th century. It was the only part of Spain that did not surrender.

The perfect time to visit San Fernando is during the months of March through July and September through November, for the best weather. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of January, February, and August. Tourists are least likely to visit in November. One of the most anticipated events in the area is Cadiz Carnaval, which is held on the weekend before Ash Wednesday. For 10 days, people celebrate through concerts, fireworks, parades, singing competitions, and many more. Music is an important component of the event. As such, people may expect performances from chirigotas, humorous groups performing satirical pieces about anything; choirs; comparsas; quartets; and romanceros, solo acts roaming the streets to provide entertainment.
What to Do & Area Attractions
One of the most famous attractions in the area is Real Teatro de las Cortes, which has been around since 1804. Back then, it was known as “Teatro Comico”. It has a seating capacity of 433 people. Another must-see attraction in the area is Sancti Petri Islet, a small, barren island. It is home to the ruins of an 18th-century castle.
