Sittard: Sitting Through History
Part of the Sittard-Geleen Municipality is the quiet and quaint town of Sittard, Netherlands. Settlement in the area has been proved to have existed since the early 5000 BC but the town has only been founded in 850 AD. The well-established history of the town is tainted by many disasters such as fire and conflicts such as wars. It has been built over and over again, each time stronger and more historically-rich. Though located in a neighboring country, the Liege Airport (LGG) – an international airport in Belgium, is only an hour drive away.
Best Time to Visit
Sittard seldom gets warm which means the sun hides behind the clouds most of the time. While it does not snow that much during winter, rain is consistently moderate all throughout the year. The best time to visit would be in the middle of the year, between June and September when the weather is comfortable. Neither too hot nor too cold. However, these months tend to be the busiest for the town as there are many travelers and you may find Sittard hotels pricey.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Centrally located near the town center is the Hotel De Limbourg which has a fancy interior decoration. Complimentary breakfast also comes with the rooms. The hotel and restaurant complex called Hotel Merici is one of the luxurious hotels in Sittard. The same can be said about the elegant Amrâth Hotel & Thermen Born- Sittard. A small historic square can be found in Sittard. This houses historic and religious sites such as St. Peter’s Church and Basilica of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. American War Cemetery is a burial ground open for public viewing. Many of those who died during the world wars lie there. Another one of the town’s historical remnants is the Ehrenstein Castle.
