Tibes Indian Ceremonial Center, Ponce, Puerto Rico
Tibes Indigenous Ceremonial Center in Ponce, Puerto Rico is home to one of the most significant archaeological finds in the Antilles. Founded in 1982, it is the oldest Antillean Indian ceremonial complex in the country to date. It is also home to the biggest indigenous cemetery discovered by far. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, it is believed to be the first astronomical observatory in Antilles.
Fun things to do in the area include visiting Museo Castillo Serralles or Museo de la Caña y el Ron. It is an agricultural museum illustrating the history of the rum industry and sugarcane. It is housed in a 4-story building established in the 1930's. Tourists should also visit Parque de Bombas. Originally, it was established as a pavilion for an exhibit in 1882. Eventually, it became the country’s first fire station. By 1990, it closed and the facility was converted into a museum. It was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Another interesting site to visit in the area is Residencia Armstrong-Poventud. Designed by Manuel Victor Domenech, it features a unique architectural style called “Ponce Creole”. Other attractions include the Ponce History Museum and the Teatro la Perla. One of the best hotels in the area is Ponce Plaza Hotel & Casino.
