YWL first opened its doors in 1956 and is owned by Transport Canada. However, in 1997, YWL’s ownership and operations were transferred to the City of Williams Lake. This public airport operates independently in the Municipal Services of Williams Lake and also serves the Cariboo Initial Attack Fire Center.
Apart from its commercial services, YWL also serves as a medivac, aircraft maintenance, and general aviation facility. In 2019, an investment plan was adopted by the City Council, which recommends the development of the expansion of Williams Lake Airport. This airport mainly serves the city of Williams Lake including its surrounding towns such as Forest Grove, 100 Mile House, Clinton, Bridge Lake, and Jesmond among many others.
