Akrotiri: A Beautiful Prehistoric Town
Akrotiri, Santorini, Greece is a prehistoric settlement. Historically, it served as an important port and had connections to mainland Greece and traveling as far as Egypt and Syria. The town was thought to be no more when it was covered with volcanic ash after a volcanic eruption occurred on the island. Today, the settlement is but an exhibit, dug out, preserved, and exhibited as one of the most important archeological sites in the country. Visitors can now walk on the walkways and walk among the two to three story buildings that was. To get to Akrotiri, visitors will go through the Santorini National Airport (JTR).
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Santorini is from the months of April to November. During these months the weather is warm and little rain is to be expected. A visit in August will have tourists attend the annual Ifestia Festival, a Greek volcano festival, celebrating and commemorating the eruption of the volcano. The settlement of Akrotiri is an important sight and so a visit to the Archaeological Museum is a must when in Santorini. Visitors can also go on a daring adventure to visit the Palea Volcano. Lastly, visitors can taste great wine from the Gavalas Vineyard among many others and head to the many beaches that Santorini is known for.
There are hotels located near the Akrotiri archaeological site. Thira’s Dolphin is a few minutes’ walk away from the site and features simple rooms with balconies or patios with a view.
