Sittwe Airport – AKY Airport
Sittwe Airport is an airport located in the beautiful city of Sittwe, the capital city of Rakhine State in Myanmar. It operates domestic flights to different destinations in the country. Sittwe Airport is only one of 26 airports in the country but it is serviced by several airlines.
Best Time to Visit
Sittwe Airport or AKY Airport started out as RAF Station Sittwe. It was a military airfield used in World War II. It wasn’t until 1947 when the International Aero Limited Company handed the airfield to the Department of Civil Aviation. The airport was then upgraded and featured a 6,000 feet by 140 feet runway with a gravel mixed asphalt surface. In 2002, the airport building was extended. On May 2009, the runway was added with a 4 feet thick asphalt concrete layer to be able to cater to F-28 jets. The airport is equipped with HF, VHF, NDB, as well as Night Landing Facilities. As many as 90,000 passengers were accommodated in the years 2010-2011 and it is estimated to be able to accommodate as much as 150,000 passengers annually. Residents from Thandwe, Yangon, and Kyaukpyu land in Sittwe Airport upon arrival to the city.
