Alturas: A City for Nature Lovers
Formerly known as Dorrisville or Dorris Bridge, this county seat is where you can find regional government offices like the Department of Motor Vehicles office. It’s a remote city with lots of wilderness surrounding it – which is why Alturas, CA is a ripe site for exploration. The name Alturas is actually Spanish for “heights” which is a fitting name because of the city’s elevation. During September however, the tourism traffic starts to spike again with the re-introduction of Modoc County’s Big Balloon weekend done in Alturas every year. During the festival, bright air balloons are launched into the air while the immediate areas are overrun by booths, restaurants, and entertainment.

There are multiple places to visit in Alturas, California starting with the Arrowhead Golf Course. The golf course is top tier with a championship spread, upscale amenities, and excellent services. The Modoc County Museum is also worth a visit with its collection of World War II firearms and Native American history objects. After soaking up the history, guests can visit the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge with more than 7,000 acres of coverage. The refuge is setup as a local habitat for migratory birds and crop cultivation with activities like hiking, boating, and fishing.
