Ansbach: An 8th-Century Monastery Turned Prosperous City
Ansbach, Germany is a city in Bavaria first developed as a Benedictine monastery in the 8th century. It was originally known as “Onoltesbach”.
Best Time to Visit
With an oceanic climate, it is highly recommended to visit Ansbach during the months of May through September. The busiest months are usually August, September, and November. Tourists are least likely to visit in December. Every late July and/or early August, the Ansbach Bach Week is held. It is a music festival honoring Johann Sebastian Bach that has been around since 1947. Another popular event nearby is Altstadtfest in Nuremberg, which is held every September. One of its most prominent highlights is the traditional water jousting, where teams from all over the country compete against one another in rowboating. The event also features a fair and a massive parade.

St. Gumbertus Church is one of the most well-known attractions in the city. Originally a church of a monastery established by St. Gumbert in the first century, it now serves as one of the venues of Bachwoche Ansbach. It is also home to some of the oldest structures in the city. Another popular destination in the area is Residenz Ansbach or Margrave’s Palace, which used to be the seat of government of the Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. Currently, it is the seat of government of Middle Franconia. It is particularly known for its Orangerie, which hosts the Rococo Festival. Get to tour the Markgrafen Museum.
