Back in 1941 when it was still a flight training school, tragedy struck them when 2 aircrafts collided mid-air killing the students who boarded on the 2 planes as well as their instructor – Donald Bush. In honor of his service, the area was named after him – Bush Field. It closed down around 1944 and was transferred to Augusta at the end of World War II since it served no use for the military men that time. It became the commercial airport of Augusta in 1950. Flight school barracks were renovated and got leased to Continental Hotels.
