Funafuti International Airport serves Funafuti, the capital city of the island nation of Tuvalu. It is located in the a few minutes from the city center in the Funafuti Atoll. The airport also serves the rest of the country, as it is the only airport in Tuvalu. Owned and operated by the Tuvalu Government, the airport sits at an elevation of three meters above sea level. Best Time to Visit
FUN was built by U.S.’ Seabees, also known as the United States Naval Construction Battalions, during World War II. The original airport had an airstrip and a control tower. When the fighting moved further down to Japan, the Americans moved out of the airport. After the war, in the late 1940s, the airfield was developed into a military airport. Funafuti International Airport has one runway with an asphalt surface. It originally had a coral aggregate surface. In 2016, further improvements were made to the runway.
