Garut: A Sacred City Within Java
Garut is the capital of the Garut Regency in West Java, Indonesia. It was established as the capital after a team was sent to scout the land and one of their European members had scraped his hands on some thorns. When asked what happened, he exclaimed “Kakarut,” which the locals had mistaken for “Gagarut.” This was the origin of the town’s name. The closest airport to Garut is the Husein Sastranegara International Airport.

The weather is generally humid in Garut, Indonesia. Months of February to March is a good period for catching temperate weather, as the hotter periods in Garut are usually at the latter half of the year. The least busy month in terms of tourism for the town is in April. The Gebyar Pesona Budaya Garut also usually occurs in April and is organize by the local government in an effort to promote local arts and culture.

Candi Cangkuang is an ancient Hindu and Buddhist temple, also known as a candi, situated in the peaceful Kampung Pulo Village in the Garut Regency. The temple is a small structure that houses a damaged but sacred statue of Shiva. The Ciawitali Mosque is located in the more commercial areas of Garut and is surrounded by a wide selection of hotels.
