Galway Airport - GWY Ireland
Galway Airport is based in the city of Galway, Ireland. It has an airport code of GWY and is owned by the Galway City Council. It has a relatively small asphalt runway at a little over half a mile, limiting the kind of aircraft the airport could handle to smaller jets. Galway Airport’s busiest year to date was 2007, where it accommodated over 300,000 passengers. In 2013, the airport was forced to close down after its aviation license ceased. It briefly resumed operations in 2015 but closed down again in 2016.
Best Time to Visit
After a runway extension in 1987, Galway Airport slowly gained traction commercially, and by 2007, became the fastest developing airport in Ireland. It was in 2008 that numbers began to drop, with airlines ceasing or limiting some of their routes. In 2012, airport workers staged a protest in after the airport’s financial backers had claimed their capital, leaving them at the risk of having no redundancy payment. Cities near Galway Airport include Ballindooley, Claregalway, and Terryland.
