Hiroshima Airport - HIJ
Hiroshima Airport is one of the public airports located in Mihara, Hiroshima, Japan, which is operated by the Hiroshima Prefectural Government. Sitting 331 meters above mean sea level, it is currently the largest airport in the Chugoku Region. It has been open for public use since 1993 and was a replacement for the old Hiroshima Airport, now called Hiroshima-Nishi Airport. It was too small to accommodate wide body aircrafts. Expansions for the old airport were not possible so they built a new airport instead.
Best Time to Visit
A single runway operates in the airport, 2,500 meters in length and was extended to 3,000 meters in 2001 together with the upgrade of the existing ILS located on the airport. A single terminal is available in the airport with separate departure and arrival facilities to both its domestic and international flights. A central atrium separates the domestic and international facilities of the Hiroshima Airport. For recreational activities near the airport, head to Fukuyama, home of the Myoo-in temple, a 5-storey pagoda from the 1300s.
