Kiel: Of Rich German Heritage
Kiel, Germany is the biggest city in Schleswig-Holstein in terms of population. The area where it stands now was once a Danish village in the 8th century. However, the recorded history of present-day Kiel only started in the 13th century. Denmark administered the city until 1864. Two (2) years later, it was annexed by Prussia. It officially became a part of Germany in 1871.

What started out as a mere ship racing has become a massive festival.

When in Kiel, tourists should see the Zoological Museum of Kiel University. Designed by architect Martin Gropius and initiated by naturalist Karl Mobius, it features various exhibits on butterfly ecology, fauna, among others. It is one of the oldest natural history museums in the country. Another museum of interest is the Kunsthalle Kiel, which is the city’s biggest museum.
