Just like most of the cities in America, Maryville, MO took its name from the town's first postmaster. Mary and her husband Amos Graham was one of the original families that settled in the region and his home was part of the present day downtown area of Maryville. The city was named after his wife. The region became a formally organized town in 1845 and became the county seat of the Nodaway County in the same year.
