Meknes: Hidden Gem of Morroco
Meknes, Morroco is one of the Imperial cities of the country. It is situated in the northern part of the country. The city is said to have a rich imperial past that is seen on its historical remnants from the arches and tilings found all over. Because of its ancient Medina that is part of UNESCO heritage site, Meknes can rival the likes of nearby cities of Marrakesh and Fez. However, it is still said to be Morroco’s hidden gem. Fez-Saiss International Airport (FEZ) is the closest airfield from Meknes which is about an hour away.

Meknes hosts two cultural festivals that shouldn’t be missed by its visitors. One is the festival of Volubilis which takes place in September. Thousands of people gather in the town to listen to the musical performances of both local and foreign artists. Another highlight is Fantasia which reenacts horse battle. Kairaouine Mosque is the second largest mosque in the country. It was established in 859 AD. The Dar Benousa is 4-star hotel and about 12 minutes away from the mosque.
