Obama: Fukui’s “Little Beach”
Obama, Japan is a city in Fukui created in 1889. Its name is a Japanese term that literally means “little beach”. It merged with surrounding municipalities and received city status in 1951.
Best Time to Visit
With a humid subtropical climate, the best time to visit Obama is during the months of April through July and September through November, for the perfect weather. The busiest months are usually March, May, and October. Tourists are least likely to visit in July. One of the most anticipated events nearby is Omizu-okuri Festival or Water Carrying Festival, which is held every March 2. During the event, water drawn from the Onyu River is presented to a temple’s principal image. Another nearby event to look forward to is Katsuyama Sagicho Festival in Katsuyama, which is held every last weekend of February. It is a local harvest festival where men dressed as women in red kimonos perform to shamisen, Taiko drums, and traditional bells and pipes.
What to Do & Area Attractions
When in the city, tourists should visit Wakasa Wan Quasi-National Park. Founded in 1955, its main feature is the ria coast of Wakasa Bay. Another interesting site to visit is Myorakuji Temple, a Buddhist temple. The statue of Amida Nyorai is its main image. It was known as Gokuraku-ji initially. It has a Japanese garden built in 1677.
