Palma di Montechiaro: Home of Baroque Ruins
Palma di Montechiaro is a town in Sicily, Italy. It was only formerly known as Palma; however, it adopted the name “Montechiaro” in 1863 in honor of the most influential and wealthiest family in Sicily. Visitors in this town enjoy a picturesque view of the coastline and well-preserved architectures. Most of the remaining structures feature a Baroque façade, which is a testament of the period when this town experienced its golden days.
Best Time to Visit
The slowest time of the year in this town is during the months of September to November due to the rainy season. As such, crowds are lesser and the rates for Palma di Montechiaro accommodations are cheaper. It should be noted, though, that visitors who happen to be in the area on the 8th of September can have the opportunity of witnessing Festa di Maria SS del Rosario, a local festival held in honor of the town’s patron saint.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Castle of Chiaramonte is the town’s most imposing structure. This 13th-century castle sits on top of a cliff and formerly served as a fortress to guard the town against invaders. Those going to the archeological area in Calvario will see a grand display of Baroque ruins like the Mother Church and Church of Santa Maria. For accommodation needs, Borgo dei Vigneti offers a family-friendly country house that has an outdoor pool where guests can relax after a long day. Alternatively, tourists can also make a booking at Baia d'Oro Hotel, a lake-view lodging that has its own private pier for the convenience of its guests.
