Iskandar Airport – PKN

Known as a military type-C airfield, Iskandar Airport is found in the city of Pangkalan Bun, Indonesia, on the southern part of the province of Kalimantan. The airport is currently operated by the government and is the only one of its kind in Central Kalimantan that is home to an Avtur fuel station. It was named in honor of Iskandar, an Indonesian paratrooper native to Central Kalimantan. The airport’s IATA location identifier is PKN, while its ICAO location identifier was previously WAOI but has been changed to WAGI.

Best Time to Visit

The PKN-Iskandar Airport is the biggest military airport in the country, which covers 3,570 hectares of land, although the runway and buildings only cover 200 hectares. That being said, the airport doubles as a forest within the city. It stands at an elevation of 23 meters above the mean sea level. Currently, only one runway can be found in the airport, an asphalt-paved airstrip with a length of 1,650 meters and a width of 30 meters. The track was lengthened in 2014 to 2,120 meters for it to handle bigger aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. Six airlines operate in Iskandar Airport, with daily scheduled flights to various parts of Indonesia. Make sure to explore the city of Pangkalan Bun while you’re in the area.
