Pyin Oo Lwin: The City of Flowers in Myanmar
A hill town in Myanmar, Pyin Oo Lwin is located at the Shan Hills around 42 miles east of Mandalay – the second largest city in the country. It first began as a military outpost with 24 households on it, permanently becoming one in 1897. It became a hill station because of its climate, eventually becoming British Burma’s summer capital. The main industries in this town are flower and vegetable gardens, sweater knitting, pineapple and strawberry orchards. The British names it Maymyo meaning “May’s Town” because of Colonel May who was a veteran during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
