The largest airport in the Baltic States, Riga International Airport serves direct flights to 106 destinations in 30 countries. It is located in the Marupe Municipality west of Riga, Latvia. It is a joint-stock company wholly owned by the Latvian government with the Ministry of Transport as holder of the state capital share. It is a hub for the Latvian national carrier airBaltic, as well as SmartLynx Airlines, and RAF-Avia.
Best Time to Visit
RIX-Riga International Airport was built in 1973 as an alternative to the then already outdated Spilve Airport. It has three terminals – A, B, and C for Schengen, with C also dedicated to non-Schengen departures. Schengen arrivals go through Arrivals 1 in Terminal A, while non-Schengen ones are handled in Arrivals 2 at Terminal C. Riga International Airport is equipped with an Instrument Landing System or ILS, which enables pilots to conduct an instrument landing approach in cases when they can’t establish a visual connection with the runway. It is also home to the first dedicated business aviation terminal of the Baltics, which opened in 2010. From RIX, travelers can easily visit the cities of Balozi, Jurmala, Olaine, and Salaspils.
