Shibukawa: A Sweet Japanese Escape
Shibukawa, Japan is a city in Gunma created in 1889 upon the establishment of the municipalities system. It became a city in 1954 after absorbing Furumachi, Kanashima, and Toyoaki.
Best Time to Visit
It is best to visit Shibukawa anytime between April and June for the best weather conditions. Usually, the busiest months are January, March, and April. People are least likely to visit in December, so it is a great choice for a quiet Christmas vacation. Nearby cities host some of the most exciting annual events in Gunma. One example would be Kanra Samurai Festival in Kanra every March. Since 1985, locals have been participating in this samurai parade, dressing up as samurais and celebrating the culture. Then, there is Shibazakura Festival in Misato. When cherry blossom petals start falling, moss phlox begin blooming. This typically starts in mid-April, lasting for a month. As such, Shibazakura Park is open for just this particular month to let people enjoy thousands of vibrant moss phlox.
