Sonthofen: Home to Dairy, Natural Reserves, and Ski Lifts
A part of the Bavarian Alps, the town of Sonthofen, Germany sits in the region of Oberallgau. It was awarded Alpine City of the Year back in 2005. The town is well known for its milk and cheese industry, a contributing factor as to why many tourists drop by for a visit. It’s well-established history starts as far as the Stone Age and one of the most devastating blow the town has received was when it was bombed twice during the World Wars. Nonetheless, it has remained strong and is a now a leading tourist destination in the country.

Sonthofen prevails with a chilly weather all throughout the year. Sometimes, moderate to heavy rain falls during the middle of the year while the temperature would drop below freezing point especially during the winter season. It is during winter when it is the busiest and most crowded in town. Many travelers flock to the town to enjoy the snow and the ski areas nearby. Hence, Sonthofen hotels are pricey during these months.

If you happen to be around town during the summer, the Okokurpark is an ecological park where you can enjoy the sights of hundreds of flora and fauna. The Hinanger Waterfall is also a short drive from the town. It is hidden in the gorgeous mountain ranges and a challenging hike is required to marvel its beauty. On the other hand, the Schwäbeleholz-Lift Sonthofen is the most popular ski lift close to the town center.
