Sylva, NC is a town within Jackson County. The name originated from William D. Sylva, who was a handyman who spent most of his time with General E. R. Hampton and his daughter. His daughter was fond of the handyman and when asked what the city name should be, as his father owned most of the land in the area, she named it “Sylva”. Although some claim the handyman’s surname was ‘Selvey’. This town lies between the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Great Smoky Mountains.
