Tendo: A Tender, Full-Flowered Nook
Known to be the center of production of the wooden pieces used in Shogi – the Japanese chess, is the city of Tendo. Situated in the Yamagata Prefecture and often overlooked by tourists, what many do not know is that the city has a lot to offer. From breathtaking sceneries, to relaxing onsen spas, and the extensive flowering and fruit-bearing orchards, Tendo, Japan is surely an appealing destination.
Best Time to Visit
Tendo, Japan, with a humid continental climate, experiences hot summers and cool winters. There are also some months when moderate rain showers are expected. Between the months of February and June are the best time to visit as these are months when there are less chance of raining. During April, the Sakura Cherry Blossom Festival is held, may draw more visitors to the city than the other months, and Tendo hotels have exorbitant rates.

It is a must to visit the Tendo Shogi Museum, where you can learn all about the Japanese chess and even get to see the different styles. From there, you can go directly to Tendo Park, where you can hike up the small mountain Maizuru and marvel at the at least 2000 cherry trees planted there. Of course, while in Japan, it is also a must to bathe in one of the onsen spas such as Goshiki Onsen.
