Toncontin International Airport is a civil and military airport that serves the Tegucigalpa, Honduras. It is also known as the Teniente Coronel Hernan Acosta Mejia Airport and goes by the airport code TGU. Located 6 kilometers outside the center of Tegucigalpa, it also serves the cities of Yaguacire, El Tablon, Las Tapias, El Tizatillo, and more. The origin of the name Toncontin is unknown, but locals say that is derived from the Nahuati word ‘Tocotin’, a name of a sacred dance in Yucatan. TGU-Toncontin International Airport is infamous for having one of the most difficult approaches, especially in inclement weather due to its proximity to mountainous terrain. There have been attempts to replace the airport with the Soto Cano Airport, located in Comayagua. TGU has since been improved through the works of the Airport Corporation of Tegucigalpa. There is one runway with an asphalt surface. It sits at an elevation of 1,005 meters above mean sea level. Approach to the airport was made easier by bulldozing a portion of the hillside.
