Tokoname: Make Kilns with your Kin
Tokoname, Japan is an alluring city facing the Ise Bay. A city of pottery, its nickname “Red City” has come about because of the red clay being used in making the ceramics. The type of ceramics being produced solely in the city is named after it as Tokoname-yaki. People who wish to visit Tokoname may take an hour train ride from Chubu Centrair/Nagoya International Airport (NGO).
Best Time to Visit
It is mostly wet throughout the entire year over at Tokoname, Japan with the exception of short, hot summers between June and September. However, it is the most comfortable to visit the town during October and November and also most enjoyable as the Tokoname Float Festival is held within these months. Another good side is there are relatively lower number of tourists and Tokoname hotels are cheaper.
What to Do & Area Attractions
What better way to start your journey in this quaint town that a visit to the INAX Tile Museums. It is a cluster of five museums where you can learn about the history of ceramic production and even get to experience making your own clay ball! If you have kids, the famous chain of children’s theme park, Legoland Japan, is only half an hour away from the city. It is also a must to at least visit one shrine while in the country such as Koromo Shrine. Hotel Route-Inn Tokoname Ekimae, the Hotel Milago Chubu Airport, and the 4-star J Hotel Rinku are wonderful Tokoname hotels close by the city center. All of which are also easily walkable from train stations.
