Vestmannaeyjar: A Picturesque Icelandic Getaway
Vestmannaeyjar, Heimaey is an archipelago that sits on the Atlantic Ocean on the southern edge of Iceland. Also known as Westman Islands, the archipelago is composed of 15 islands and about 30 rocky skerries, all of which are located in the Southern Icelandic Volcanic Zone. The municipality is located on the largest island, Heimaey. It is most accessible from the Vestmannaeyjar Airport (VEY), just 2 miles south of the city center.
Best Time to Visit
Vestmannaeyjar, Heimaey welcomes travelers with ideal weather all throughout the year. Expect cold temperatures all year round, however the warmest months are June through August. The busiest months for tourism are December through February. Tourists are unlikely to visit in April. In July or August, Heimaey holds the biggest outdoor festival called Þjóðhátíð. Meanwhile, Goslokahátíð occurs over four days in July.
What to Do & Area Attractions
When in Vestmannaeyjar, Heimaey, visit the majestic Eldfell Volcano, which last eruption in 1973 garnered international attention, as it destroyed over 400 homes. Today, the Eldheimar Museum stands around what was left of one of those homes, featuring displays on the volcanic eruption and local history. Seek adventure in Heimaklettur, the highest peak in the archipelago featuring a seacliff and 360-degree views of the ocean below. Go birdwatching at Puffin Lookout or learn more about marine life at the Beluga Whale Sanctuary.
