Keflavík International Airport - KEF
Keflavík International Airport, with the airport code KEF, is Iceland’s main international gateway. It is located in Sandgerði, approximately 50 kilometers from the capital city Reykjavik, Iceland, and about 2 miles from the town of Keflavik. As the country’s largest airport, it serves the Greater Reykjavik Area. Originally built for use during World War II by the United States military, this airport was eventually returned to Iceland in 1951 under a defense agreement. Today, the airport is mostly utilized for international flights, with scheduled offerings to the North America and the rest of Europe. It features two working runways, and a terminal that was named after the first European in North America, Leif Erikson. Travelers flying in to this airport can visit not just Keflavik, but also Reykjanesbaer and the capital city Reykjavik.
