Myvatn: Northern Lights Capital of Iceland
A shallow lake in the middle of an area of active volcanism, Myvatn, Iceland has a huge inhabited area in its surroundings. Its name is a tribute to the many midges found in the area during summer. It is known not just for active volcanism, but also for significant biological activity. The nearest airports includes Akureyri Airport, Husavik Airport, and Myvatn Airport.
Best Time to Visit
Myvatn has the perfect weather during the months of March through November. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of December through February. Tourists are least likely to visit in April. Every May, the coveted Myvatn Marathon is held. It begins and ends by the Myvatn Nature Baths. As such, competitors get a free entrance to Myvatn Nature Baths. A popular component of the event is Lava Run, a 5.84-mile trail run.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Dimmuborgir is one of the most famous attractions in the area. Its name literally means “dark castles” or “dark cities or “dar forts”. The area is known for its unusually shaped lava fields. It features different rock formations and volcanic caves. There are also large, hollow cell-like or chamber-like structures. Another must-visit is Hverfjall Center or Hverfell, a tephra cone or tuff ring volcano that erupted in 2500 BP. It is popular for its crater that has a diameter of about 0.62 miles.
